It is the part of the job application everyone hates: "Upload Cover Letter (Optional)."

Do you write one? Do you skip it? Does anyone actually read it?

The short answer: Most technical recruiters do not read cover letters. They go straight to your GitHub and your Resume Skills section.

However, there are two specific times when you must write one.

1. When to Skip It

If you are applying to a giant tech company (like Google or Amazon) via a portal, skipping the cover letter is usually fine. Their volume is too high. Your resume determines if you pass the filter, not your letter.

2. When to Write It

  • Small Startups: Founders actually read applications. A personal note saying "I love your product because..." goes a long way.
  • Career Switchers: If you were an accountant for 10 years and now you are a developer, your resume might look confusing. Use the cover letter to connect the dots and explain your passion for the switch.

3. The "Summary" is the New Cover Letter

Since most people skip the separate document, your Resume Summary (the 2-3 lines at the top of your PDF) is critical.

This is where you pitch yourself. Instead of "Looking for a job," write: "Full-Stack Developer with a passion for scalable backend systems. built a real-time chat app serving 500+ users."

4. Focus on the Resume First

A great cover letter cannot save a bad resume. But a great resume can often get you hired without a cover letter.
